HUST.(2020-2022)
HUST stands for Halmstad University Solar Team and is a student-driven non-profit organization. The purpose of the organization is to support the development of renewable energy technology, especially solar power technology. As of now the organization has 35 members and was established in 2016. I applied and got accepted for the team in 2020 and worked actively until the summer of 2022 when i handed over my responsibilities. My role was Senior marketing Lead/ Marketing team leader. This meant that I was responsible for the entire marketing division consisting of seven students and also have a leading role in the core team which is the highest decision making body in the organization.

My time in HUST has given me a lot of experience in leading and working in a multidisciplinary team with people studying marketing, engineering, and design. I’ve learned how to design digital solutions, printed design, web design, and how to coordinate work between internal and external teams. My participation in the project has given me a chance to work within a broad spectrum of designs and work processes. Below I will mention some of the work that I’ve done.
Webpage
The core team decided to update the team webpage due to the previous one having a lot of issues and no coherent design. The project was led by me and was going on for six months. During these six months, I and another designer worked on visual design, interaction design, usability, and evaluation.

The project consisted of three phases, where the first phase was an evaluation of the previous webpage to find areas that were good but also areas for improvement, we focus especially on visual design and usability. In the first phase, we also conducted an external analysis of about 20 different web pages from other solar car race teams. The external analysis showed that the use of languages, imagery, and visual design were crucial elements for a successful webpage.

The second phase was focused on ideation, concept generation, design, and functionality. It was in this phase where most of the decisions about layout, functions, and choice of color were taken. A lot of iterations were done in the second phase, we usually collected feedback from other members of the team to make sure that we captured the common vision of the team.
The third phase which was the longest phase was solely focused on the development, programming, and implementation of the webpage. This was the phase I was least active in.

The project gave me practical experience in working with Web design and how to work towards a big team with a lot of different opinions and ideas.
NOTE! Due to disagreements with the webpage provider, the webpages do not have an HTTPS certificate right now.

Rollups
In this project, I worked alone with the design of the rollups but had some help with taking the photographs. In total four rollups were designed in two separate rounds; the project was carried out together with a Dekorcenter in Laholm who was in charge of printing and assembling the rollups. The project was ordered as a result to expand our visual profile and increase the organization’s exposure on the campus of Halmstad University.

The project was carried out over two phases, first I sat down with the rest of the core team and discusses the expectation and wishes were for the rollups. Then I put together a mood board with different ideas and sources of inspiration, the mood board was used to create the first set of designs. After iterations and feedback from both the team and Dekorcenter, three different designs were chosen. The last step in the first phase was to show the core team the three designs in a digital workshop with the purpose to choose the best design.

After the design had been chosen, I coordinated the work with the team photographer to take some photos for the rollups. Lastly, I sent the material over to Dekorcenter for the last validation before they went into print.

The project gave me experience in working with external parties as well as experience in working with printed design.

Merchandise
For the organization to increase exposure among students and younger people, this project was ordered by the core team. The project lasted for six weeks and was led by me which meant that I had sole responsibility for the planning and the budget, I worked together with another designer from the team and the company JAC Tryck & Brodyr in Halmstad. This was a very fun project and was a bit special because I was solely in charge of the entire process.

First, I created a budget for the project and a brief of what I wanted to accomplish with the project. This was then shown to the core team who gave the green light for both the project and the budget, they also presented the request that the products be purchased in sufficient quantity to last for two years. After the approval, I created a plan for the six weeks covering the project and visual guidelines for the merchandise. These guidelines covered color, material, placement of the team logo and what types of merchandise were of interest. The guidelines were iterated together with the other designer.

After choosing what merchandise we wanted to order we sent the material to JAC Tryck & Brodyr who created mockups for the different products. Each mockup was examined and iterated until we were satisfied. When all the mockups had been approved, I put in the order to purchase the merchandise. Despite delayed shipping because of the pandemic, the project was a huge success.

The project which was one of my favorites gave me a lot of experience in working with design for merchandise and also how to work with a budget for smaller projects.
